– Modern Pranic Healing from a Yogi’s Perspective –

Pranic Healing is a science that uses Laws of Nature which people do not know or are not aware of. Miracles are fantastic events which utilize hidden Laws of Nature. Miracles do not break the Laws of Nature; they are actually based on them

– GrandMaster Choa Kok Sui

I was introduced to hatha yoga at a very early age by my mother who was and still is an avid practitioner of Sivananda Yoga well into her 80’s.  I grew up with it being the norm for me to come downstairs in the morning on my way to school to see my mother in our living room upside down in a headstand or sticking her tongue out, eyes bulging, exhaling wildly in a Lion Yawn. “Have a good day Honey”….”Thanks Mom!” Nothing odd about that! Although afterschool snacks at our house were never popular with my friends because it was always fibre filled oat & bran muffins – sugary, processed and salty snacks were too rajasic for our growing bodies! Healthy living was a given in our home while never to the extreme, following the yoga tenets of Proper Exercise – Proper Breathing – Proper Diet – Proper Mind and Proper Rest. It was also in my mother’s bookshelves that I learned about The Soul, Reincarnation, Jungian philosophy, Gnostic Gospels, Theosophy, The Bhaghavad Gita, Yogananda, Life Energy and Healing. The concept of working with my personal energy or trusting the ‘vibes’ I could feel off of others was something that was encouraged for me to explore and understand. When I finally met my Teacher in Pranic Healing at the age of 25 the idea of embarking on a journey into this specific modality felt like a natural progression to all my years of yoga practice.  One that has positively influenced every aspect of my life in every day for the last 26 years.

Why the MCKS Pranic Healing® system is known as Modern Pranic Healing

Prana is an ancient Sanskrit word for life energy or vital energy. It is this vital energy that animates and sustains all life in the natural world. Every culture since ancient times has an understanding and word to describe this energy. The Chinese call it Chi, in Japan it is known as Ki. The Bible speaks of Mana from Heaven or the Bread of Life while the Polynesian culture also calls this life energy Mana. The Ancient Greeks called this pneuma the vital spirit, soul, or creative force of a person. Pneuma is often used to describe ‘air in motion’ or the Breath of Life which is what the Hebrew word Ruach means. Even Luke Skywalker was taught to harness The Force in his Jedi training! The very nature of our yoga practices are steeped in the Ancient knowledge of Prana and how to harness this life force.

Yoga practices work with cultivating and transforming the energy bodies for our healing and spiritual development. We have all witnessed first-hand how this transformation occurs on many levels and can be accelerated with a more in-depth understanding of Energy.

Any long-time yoga practitioner will have come across the concept or even practices that would be called pranic healing as it simply means healing with energy in India. What makes the Modern system of Pranic Healing® unique is the marriage of science and ancient practices to develop universal techniques that can be validated and replicated again and again for their effectiveness. The modern founder of this healing modality is GrandMaster Choa Kok Sui. Born in the Philippines and trained as a chemical engineer by trade, Master Choa became interested in spiritual & esoteric topics and forms of healing at a very early age. He studied extensively the works of the Rosicrucians, Theosophy, Astara, Huna, Kabbalah, and numerous traditional healing arts from around the world.

His formal training in chemical engineering and his sense of practicality helped him formulate this step-by-step approach to healing that developed into a highly evolved and tested system of energy medicine known globally as the MCKS Pranic Healing® system we have today. It is based on the fundamental and universal principle that the body is a self-repairing living entity that possesses the innate ability to heal itself and that the healing process is accelerated by increasing the life force or vital energy readily available from the sun, air & ground on the affected part of the physical body. Pranic Healing® is applied on the bio-electromagnetic field known as the aura or energy body, which is the mold or blueprint that surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body.  In Yoga we know these integrated bodies as the layers of existence of the Koshas. This energy body absorbs life energy and distributes it throughout the physical body, to the muscles, organs, glands, etc. The reason Pranic Healing® works on the energy body (pranamaya kosha) is that physical ailments first appear as energetic disruptions in the aura before manifesting as problems in the physical body. Therefore there is no need for physical contact with the subject.

From my very first introductory class with Master Choa I felt these techniques were as familiar to me as an old friend yet completely mind-blowing as so many missing pieces in the complex puzzle of traditional yoga all just fell into place. In Pranic Healing® we are taught how to maintain and strengthen our personal energy so that the power stations or chakras located within the energy body function at optimum levels which in turn facilitates the body’s innate ability for self-healing.     In Yoga the purpose of Asanas or postures is to purify and strengthen the physical body by directly affecting the subtle energies flowing through our energy channels or nadis.  The practices of Hatha Yoga which include posture, breathing, bandhas and kriyas have a progressively healing, transformative effect on the practitioner with consistent practice. A strong, healthy and vital physical body naturally has a greater quantity and quality of Pranic energy or life force flowing through and sustaining the system. However, it is often hit and miss as to which style or approach of physical practice will suit an individual best. The different styles, approaches and even sequences found within Hatha Yoga today are like formulas for the physical and energy bodies to produce a specific and sustainable result. The classical poses we know of in the West are actually part of a much bigger and broader approach to Well Being and personal development by cultivating the physical and subtle bodies. Even the ancient manual of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika warns of incorrectly executed practices having a detrimental rather than beneficial affect for the yogi. So much of the Ancient texts of yoga are in veiled teachings, meaning the Teachings are in literal and symbolic terms. Depending on the level of development of the reader the understanding of these texts varies widely, as so often do the interpretations.  Sometimes it can take a lifetime to truly understand or process some of the most fundamental teachings and their purpose. In Pranic Healing® even the most obscure of ancient practices become clear with the in-depth and fundamental understanding of the Subtle anatomy, our energy bodies, the chakras and energy channels. Master Choa Kok Sui’s ability to clarify & systemize such a vast study as energy healing continues to astonish me even after 25  years of applying these teachings myself for my own healing and for the healing of others. I have been teaching Hatha Yoga and practicing Pranic Healing® for over 2 decades and notice just how deeply my understanding of yoga has been influenced by these remarkably concise Teachings. Now this is not to say that with a truly wonderful and highly developed Teacher a yogi will not achieve a high level of understanding and be able to embody these ancient practices. But with a complementary tool such as Pranic Healing® integrated into one’s personal practice, the path becomes so much clearer and easily validated.

Because of Pranic Healing® I am able to maintain my personal energy without the recognizable ‘teacher burnout’ we experience from working with so many different people & different bodies. When we engage with our students we are interacting with many physical bodies, energy bodies, and different psychological and emotional states all within the same class. Our ability to create and hold a neutral space where others can engage so deeply in posture or breathwork that old, congested and used up energies stored within the system can not only be released but neutralized is of paramount importance and requires developed skill. This comes with an understanding of transforming ‘energetic environments’. Now the ancient practices of chanting Om or other mantras and the burning of incense take on a more practical as well as their higher context. Raising the vibration in our practice space is literally about purifying the area of energetic debris and contamination. Just as we clean our space physically, we need to clean it energetically of all the different mental and emotional imprints that may have been accumulated there.

Every yoga teacher or practitioner can benefit from developing the sensitivity to subtle energy when engaging in practice and interacting with others. So often we are not aware of how our own energy is affecting our students for better or for worse. Being able to recognize any imbalances within ourselves or others gives us better radar to fine tune or tailor practices for our own or our student’s benefit. I have often had students come up to me after a class exclaiming “ I have been practicing  that technique for years but never really understood what it was doing until today!”

The Spiritual aspect of Yoga such as the Yamas & Niyamas or refinement of character and ultimately meditation for illumination and higher states of consciousness, are all for the purpose of embodying our Higher Nature on a very practical level for the betterment of the world around us. As GrandMaster Choa could often be heard saying to the students “We must constantly be reaching for Heaven with our feet firmly rooted on the ground”   – in other words Spirituality must be balanced with Practicality. Every single technique within the system of Pranic Healing® is rooted in practical application. There is no guess work or ‘tradition for tradition’s sake’.

From your very first course In PRANIC HEALING® you learn the basics of working with the auras, and specifically developed techniques which enable you to become sensitive to subtle energy or prana. This sensitivity is further developed and validated as we are taught to literally scan our own or another energy field to identify blockages and then cleanse, energize and revitalize the area with fresh prana. There is an in-depth and experiential study of :

  • Energetic Anatomy: The network of chakras, meridians and auras. This is the same Energetic Anatomy used in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese medicine for 1,000’s of years
  • Preventive Healing: learning to remove negative energetic patterns before they manifest into physical ailments for ourselves and others
  • Self-Healing: Being able to apply these healing techniques to accelerate our own healing on all levels
  • Distant/Remote Healing: for loved ones who are not present in the room with you. This particular aspect of Pranic Healing demystifies the ancient Vedic Teachings on Universal Oneness
  • Step-by-step techniques to help alleviate simple and severe ailments and conditions
  • You will learn the 11 chakra model similar to the major Acupuncture plexuses which also clarify the use of the 7 chakra model of Hatha Yoga.

There is even Meditation for spiritual development. The Meditation on Twin Hearts is an extraordinary tool for spiritual development as well as a powerful instrument of service to Humanity. This exceptional meditation is based on ancient techniques, which would have only been revealed to advanced spiritual aspirants, Arhats and Lamas – and has been reintroduced to us through Pranic Healing®. The Meditation on Twin Hearts is based on the principle that some of the major energy centers or chakras of the subtle anatomy are entry points of gateways to certain levels or horizons of consciousness. Twin Hearts refers to the heart & crown chakras. Regular practice of this meditation has the effect of increasing the functional size of our chakras and auras, thereby making the energy body stronger and more dynamic. After practicing Meditation on Twin Hearts, pranic healers were noted to heal patients quicker than before and with amazing results. It is practiced by millions of people worldwide and is a simple, natural, effortless technique.

To this day I remember my first experience with this meditation and the indescribable feeling of inner peace and joy I felt. After class Master Choa asked me how did I enjoy the meditation. My instant and unconscious response was “Oh Master, I love that meditation every time I do it!” I can still see the Teacher’s loving gaze as he looked at me in silent reflection. You see, I had actually never done this specific meditation before, well not in this lifetime. But there was a feeling of ‘coming home’. Master Choa understood this for this new and eager student, even though it took me many years later to truly process my response.

There is so much to be gained for any Yoga Teacher, Yoga trainee or Yoga enthusiast to explore the Pranic Healing® system. Noone is expected to ever believe anything blindly. You are always encouraged to understand the concepts, experience for yourself, experiment and draw your own conclusion about the practice. This is the quality that most attracted me to train deeper in this study. I did not have to sacrifice or give up my own autonomy. It can be used on a deeply personal level as well as helping our loved ones and others. The techniques and practices taught in PRANIC HEALING® are very effective and easy to apply. GrandMaster Choa developed Pranic Healing as a comprehensive system of energy medicine to improve the quality of our everyday lives.
